Wedding Postlude Music

Music for after the recessional — during the receiving line, confetti throwing, and the transition from ceremony to reception.

The postlude is the music played after the recessional while guests make their way out of the ceremony venue — during the receiving line, the confetti throwing, or simply as everyone begins the move toward the reception. It's a transition moment that deserves as much thought as any other.

Your postlude can last anywhere from 10 to 40 minutes depending on whether you have a receiving line, photos at the church, or drinks on the grounds. Plan enough music to cover the full duration, and let your musician or DJ know in advance how long they may need to play.

Tip: The postlude is a great place to use songs that didn't quite make the cut for more prominent moments — songs you love but that feel a little too casual for the ceremony itself. It's also a perfect opportunity to continue the musical mood you've set, easing guests from the solemnity of the ceremony toward the celebration ahead.
